The boy lives in a cartoon and can bring anything to life, including his friends Moose and Porcupine.
Now, Harold is an adult and refers to the narrator as “the Old Man.” One fateful day, the narrator disappears and Harold uses his trusty purple crayon to draw a door to the real world and search for the narrator. Moose joins him and the Porcupine stays behind and ends up lost in the real world.
Harold and Moose continue to ride Harold’s bike drawing, searching for the Old Man, who Harold believes to be his actual father. Terry, the mother of an imaginative boy named Mel, accidentally drives her car into a bicycle, flattening the tire, prompting Harold to draw a new picture, but Terry is confused because he has never seen Harold with a crayon in his hand. Mel manages to convince Terry to let them stay in the room directly above the garage. Later that night, Mel invites Harold downstairs, and the two become even more intimate. Harold cuts off a piece of the crayon and gives it to Mel.
