The story centers on Ted Striker (Robert Hays), a former fighter pilot haunted by a failed wartime mission and his fear of flying. When his ex-girlfriend, flight attendant Elaine Dickinson (Julie Hagerty), is on a flight to Chicago, Ted decides to face his fears and get on the same plane.
After the crew and passengers suffer from food poisoning, Ted has to take over the piloting, assisted by the air traffic control team led by the hilariously deadpan Roger Murdock (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). The film boasts a talented cast, including Leslie Nielsen, whose straight-faced performance as Dr. Rumack became legendary.
“Airplane!” is loved for its outrageous humor, unforgettable lines, and many visual gags. It stands out as a key film in the spoof genre and continues to be a favorite among comedy lovers. Its impact can be seen in many comedies that came after it.
