Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Thor (2011) introduces audiences to the God of Thunder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film follows the cocky and powerful Asgardian warrior Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, who is exiled to Earth after his reckless actions threaten peace between worlds.
On Earth, Thor learns the meaning of humility and responsibility, especially through his interactions with determined astrophysicist Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman. As Thor becomes accustomed to his new surroundings, he is challenged by his brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, who seeks power and seeks the throne of Asgard.
Visually stunning, Thor blends fantasy and action, presenting the vibrant world of Asgard alongside a more down-to-earth reality of Earth. Themes of redemption and the balance of power and responsibility are present throughout the film and form the basis for Thor’s character development in the following films. Blending humor, heart and epic battles, Thor successfully introduced a beloved superhero while expanding the Marvel Universe.
