Thangaraan (translation: Son of Gold) is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language action-adventure film. It is directed by Pa. Ranjith who co-wrote the screenplay with Tamil Prabha and Azhagiya Periyavan. The film is produced by K.E. Gnanavelu Raja under Studio Green and Neelam Productions. Vikram plays five roles in the film alongside Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy and Hari Krishnan. Set during the British colonial period, the film follows a fierce tribal leader who incurs the wrath of an alleged witch while helping a British general mine gold in his village, and tries to stop her. The film was officially announced in December 2021 under the working title “Chain 61” as it is Vikram’s 61st film, and the official title was announced in October 2022. Principal photography began in the same month. The film was shot sporadically in several parts and was completed in early July 2023. Filming locations included Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Madurai, and Karnataka. The film has music by G. V. Prakash Kumar, cinematography by A. Kishor Kumar and editing by Selva RK. Thangalaan was released worldwide in Standard, 3D and EPIQ formats on August 15, 2024, coinciding with India’s Independence Day. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. They praised the performances of the lead actors (especially Vikram, Parvathy Thiruvothu and Daniel Caltagirone) and the background music by G. V. Prakash Kumar, but criticized the historical inaccuracies, visual effects, screenplay and screenplay. However, the film was a commercial success, grossing over $100 million within two weeks.
